Career Day Shadowing - May 19, 2017
For my 10th grade career day, I went to an engineering company called Breg to shadow two engineers, Mark Constable and Steve Trejo.
Expectations
I expected that this career day wouldn't be that exciting, and would mostly be spent in an office space. I thought it would mostly be people working on CAD designs of parts and products. There's no major manufacturing processes at the place where I went, so I didn't think I would see building at all.
Interview - Mark Constable
What specific skill training helped you prepare for this job? Hands-on experience
How do you interact with other people during your work? Lots of different functions means you have to interact with many people to achieve goals. There are lots of formal and informal meetings. It's a face-to-face work environment.
Interview - Steve Trejo
What is a typical work day for you? Currently I have 3 major projects to work on, so I have to prioritize my workload. It's like a "whirlwind" of different tasks to complete.
To what extent do you find your work interesting or fulfilling? It's interesting because there's always something different to do. It's very fulfilling because we're designing products that will eventually help people.
Reflection
I really enjoyed being at Breg for career day. It was an interesting experience that I'm glad I was able to have. I learned lots about the workflow of an engineering business and how things work. I also found out about the different types of engineers, such as design engineers, who design products, and manufacturing engineers, who make sure a product can be easily and consistently mass produced. I think that if I go into the field, I'd like to work more on the design side. It seems more interesting to me to design products rather than work on making them easy to produce. I think that career day this year went very well and helped me think more about what I want to do in the workforce later in life.
